HORSES TO WATCH
By: AMERICAN TURF CLUB
HAWTHORNE
BIGBOYDANCING: Pressed the pace throughout and gamed out the win
scoring by a head. Follow at the next allowance condition.
BLACK CADILLAC: Opened up a big lead through very fast fractions and
tired only in the drive to finish last of seven, will forget to stop next out.
BOOTS ARE WALKING: Chased the pace throughout last time and ran
on well to finish second while no match for the winner; his turn next out.
DANNY C.: Was right up on the quick pace throughout and stayed on very
well for the place spot behind the late closing favorite. Was claimed from
that race and can offer value next out.
KELLY WITH A K: Trailed the field early on but did come running with a
solid late kick to finish second. Rounding back to form.
PACIFIC SUNSET: Needed the race off the layoff after chasing the early
leaders, led into the stretch but tired late for third. Should be set for best next out.
WHAT A DOC: Chased the pace, took over the lead, opened daylight but was
nailed late missing by a nose while well clear of the third place horse; graduates
next out.
4STARSPECIAL: KITTY’S MISSION: Checked into the first turn, trailed the
field of six behind a slow pace and never got going finishing fourth.
Was claimed from that race and should be followed closely right back.
LONGSHOT: SHILINSKY: Trailed the field of seven until the top of the
stretch but did close well for third last out at 26-1. Follow with straight three year old claimers.
SANTA ANITA
BEAU: Was too close up to a fast pace and then made a premature
middle move before tiring off the board. Deserves one more chance.
CONSOLIDATED FACT: Hit a fallen horse and nearly lost the rider
when fifth as the favorite. Excuses don’t get much better than that.
DR. RAMOS: Broke slowly and never got a sniff of the front-end in
disappointing effort on 3/2. Better luck next time.
FORGIVING: Got squeezed back after the start in return from a four-month
layoff and still outran 27-1 odds for third, just a nose out of second. Don’t
ignore in second off the layoff.
GILDED BERTRANDO: Got hooked in a three-length-gap speed duel
in :22.1 and :45.4 in a two-turn race and still held on for second in
a race otherwise ruled by closers. Tab.
GOLD RUCKUS: Chased a slow pace and got up for third in return
from a three-month layoff. Can’t be overlooked in second off the layoff.
LORD MACHO: Got caught in a 3 1/2-length-gap duel for the lead and
finish off the board as a result on 3/4. Too early to give up on him.
MARENOSTRUM: Disappointed in U.S. debut after losing ground four
wide into the first turn while rank early. Can win in second off the long layoff.
POLYFIRST: Broke slowest in a seven-horse field down the hill and never
got back into the race behind a slow to moderate pace set by a
wire-to-wire winner. Can make amends.
PREACHINTOTHECHOIR: Showed life in career debut but had a traffic-filled
trip and settled for a mid-pack finish. May not be a maiden for long.
SHOOT FOR GOLD: Toss-out eighth-place finish on 3/2 when she
balked at loading and then broke slowly. Expect her to show up off the
claim by Carava.
SIPHON MELODY: Broke slowly and rushed up toward the pace to lose
her best chance at the start in return from an eight-month layoff. Worth
another shot.
SMARMY CHARM: Overlooked first starter broke six lengths behind the
rest of the field and still outran 38-1 odds for third in a promising effort.
URBAN KING: Was well bet off a year layoff but got running too late in
a slow-paced mile turf race. May not be denied next time.
WEEKEND AT LARRY’S: Should be a live overlay next time after breaking
slowly and finishing far back as the favorite on 3/3. Try again.
4STARSPECIAL: TANKS ALOT MAN: Got off to a slow start from the rail
and then rushed up into a :21.1 pace to lose all chance on 3/4. Can rebound
with a better start.
LONGSHOT: AMERICAN LIBERTY: Got off to a tough start from the
difficult rail post and ended up fourth after hustling up into the fray after the
slow start. Likely to improve with a better start and/or post.
