Survivalist survives in Gotham Stakes
By: Sports Network
Ozone Park, NY (Sports Network) - Survivalist, ridden by Richard Migliore, ran
down the leaders in deep stretch to capture Saturday's $150,000 Gotham Stakes
at Aqueduct. The time for the mile race was 1:35.61.
Immediately after the finish of the race the stewards put up the inquiry sign. A
question into the running of the last part of the Gotham delayed making the
race official.
Survivalist survived the inquiry to remain the winner. However, second place
finisher Pavo was disqualified to fourth place for interfering with
Naughty New Yorker. The favorite Galloping Grocer was moved from third to
second with Naughty New Yorker placed third.
Survivalist posted a win of 3/4's of a length over Pavo at wire. Migliore kept his
mount off the pace allowing the leaders to exhaust each other. Survivalist ran
down the leaders from the outside through the stretch.
The Gotham is the final prep race for the Wood Memorial on the road to the
Kentucky Derby. The Wood Memorial will be run on April 9.
Survivalist is owned by Ogden Mills Phipps and trained by Hug McGaughey. This
was the three-year-old's first start in a stakes race and it added $90,000 to his
bankroll. In his short career, Survivalist has won two of five starts with
earnings of $131,820.
Survivalist returned $8.90, $4.00 and $2.90. Galloping Grocer paid $3.40
and $2.30, while Naughty New Yorker paid $2.60 for show.
