Wood Memorial attracts eight three-year-olds
By: SPORTS NETWORK
Ozone Park, NY (Sports Network) - Lightly-raced Bellamy Road is the 2-1
morning-line favorite for Saturday's $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. The
Wood Memorial is the signature event on the Aqueduct schedule.
Owned by George Steinbrenner, Bellamy Road will take on seven rivals in the
1 1/8 mile race. The colt will be ridden by Javier Castellano and start from post
three as another of trainer Nick Zito's Kentucky Derby hopefuls.
This will be just the second start of the year for Bellamy Road after winning an
allowance race at Gulfstream Park. He has won three of four career starts for $161,400.
However, the horse to beat may prove to be California shipper Going Wild.
Going Wild has won the San Miguel and Sham Stakes this year at Santa Anita, and
is coming off a second place finish to Declan's Moon in the Santa Catalina Stakes.
Declan's Moon is now off the Kentucky Derby trail with an injury.
Going Wild is the second pick in the program at 5-2 and will break from post
five with Victor Espinoza riding. The colt has earned $212,420 while winning
three of seven starts for owners Robert and Beverly Lewis and trainer by D. Wayne Lukas.
Holding down the third spot in the morning line at 5-1 is Gotham Stakes winner
Survivalist. Trained by Shug McGaughey, Survivalist will be ridden by Richard Migliore
and start from post four.
Survivalist is owned by Ogden Mills Phipps and has recorded two wins in five
starts for $131,820. The three-year-old will be coming from off the pace in his
second start in a stakes race.
Completing the field for the Wood Memorial are Scrappy T, Byanosejoe, Pavo,
Galloping Grocer and Naughty New Yorker.
