Sun King wins Pennsylvania Derby
By: SPORTS NETWORK
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Sun King, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, rallied
down the stretch to win the $750,000 Pennsylvania Derby on Monday at
Philadelphia Park.
Sun King, trained by Nick Zito, rallied at the quarter-mile pole and pulled away at the
end for a 4 1/2-length victory. Sun King paid $4.80, $3.40 and $3.00.
Southern Africa returned $7.20 and $5.40 for finishing second, and Smokescreen was
third and paid $7.00.
Sun King drew the extreme outside post in the 14-horse field and powered past
Tani Maru with just over two furlongs left to win.
"He told me to try and stay close," Bejarano said of Zito. "After I got position after
the start, I decided to be patient and save him as much as I could to about the
half-mile pole."
Bejarano's win made him racing's newest millionaire with just over $1.3 million
in earnings.
