Proof that both ends of the riding spectrum reside in the jockey’s room at Arlington Park, four days before jockey Randy Meier earned career win No. 4000 on Sept. 16, 2007, jockey Inez Karlsson notched her maiden score when she guided Team Block’s Death Valley to an 8 ¾-length victory in the eighth race at Arlington Park on Sept. 12. As an interesting side note, as this article goes to press Meier and Karlsson share an agent in Penny Ffitch-Heyes.

Karlsson, from the town of Göteborg, Sweden, home of boxer Ingemar Johansson who stunned the sports world (as well as the world’s reigning heavyweight champion) by knocking out Floyd Patterson with his legendary right cross, was a boxer herself before turning her attention to the ponies.
