Fair Grounds (Louisiana Derby Day full card) Selections
SATURDAY, MARCH 25
FAIR GROUNDS
SPOT PLAYS
Race 5
#6 Merlazza
Was live on the tote board in career debut for Cox and
nearly graduated at first asking when second by a head while 10 lengths ahead
of the rest of the field. Quickly returned for the maiden win last time in
impressive fashion at 6F and now moves up to the next logical class level.
Speed figures stack up nicely against these and she should handle the added
distance in this stretchout to a route.
Race 12 – Louisiana Derby
#2 Instant Coffee
Plus exacta box w/ #5 Disarm
#2 Instant Coffee established himself as the best of the Kentucky
Derby contenders taking the Fair Grounds route to the Derby back in January
when he was the easy winner of the Grad 3 Lecomte Stakes in an effort that
looks even better now that third-place finisher Confidence Game came back to
win the $1 million Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn in his next race. Trained by Brad
Cox, who has multiple contenders pointing for the Kentucky Derby, but Instant
Coffee looms above his barnmates as the trainer’s first-stringer. Also won last
fall’s Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill. He’s got a good
closing running style that fits perfectly in the long stretch run of the Fair
Grounds oval, and is well-suited to get today’s extended 1 3/16-mile distance.
Play in exacta box w/ #5 Disarm, who seems to be the horse in the
race with the best chance of an upset if you are betting this race with an eye
on beating the favorite or at least looking to pair Instant Coffee in the
exacta boxes. Disarm ran fast against good horses when winning his maiden race
back at Saratoga last fall, and he got a race under his belt for trainer Steve
Asmussen off the long layoff last time out with a second-place finish at
Oaklawn. Prepped and ready for today’s second outing off the layoff and has top
connections in his favor at 10-1 odds on the morning line.
