Won at first asking last summer as a 2yo at Saratoga, and
that’s a rare occurrence for trainer David Donk, who almost never cranks up his
first starters yet for their best efforts. The win was enough to earn Lady
Jasmine a step up vs. stakes competition in her next start in the PG Johnson
Stakes, but something clearly went wrong that day and Lady Jasmine has been
sidelined ever since. Now she returns for Donk, who does well with horses
returning from long layoffs, and has obvious talent that led to her turf win at
Saratoga. Speed figures, which were earned in young early season 2yo races, are
not indicative of what this horse will do now as a 3yo, leading to a severe
overlay in the odds at 8-1 on the morning line.
Race 11 – Wood Memorial
#5 Slip Mahoney
Plus exacta box w/ #13 Hit Show
#5 Slip Mahoney exits a remarkable second-place finish in the
Gotham Stakes at one mile at Aqueduct where he appeared to have lost all chance
at the break leaving him at the back of the 14-horse field. Slip Mahoney is not
a closer. He owns good tactical speed and ideally should be on or close to the
pace where he belongs, given anything better than a disastrous start. There’s
not a lot of speed entered in the Wood Memorial, so expect Slip Mahoney to
press the pace of #7 Arctic Arrogance and take over when that horse tires for
trainer Brad Cox
Play in exacta box w/ #13 Hit Show, who should combine with Slip
Mahioney for an all Brad Cox exacta box. Hit Show will likely be the favorite
in this spot based on his last-out 5 ½-length win in the Withers Stakes at this
course and distance. He will indeed be tough if he repeats that winning effort,
but he’s vulnerable on Saturday because he drew post 13.
