Pimlico (Preakness Day full card) Selections
SATURDAY, MAY 20
PIMLICO – PREAKNESS STAKES DAY
SPOT PLAYS
Race 5
#4 Amani’s Image
Closed from dead last in 5 1/2F return turf sprint prep
race and got up for second in return from a nine-month layoff behind only an
uncatchable runaway lone speed leader. Served notice that she’s ready in return
from the sidelines and is ready to win with this stretchout in distance with
John Velazquez aboard for Motion at 8-1 on the morning line.
Race 13 – Preakness Stakes
#6 Perform
Exits a win in the local
Preakness prep race, the Frederico Tesio Stakes, which was more impressive than
might be immediately apparent. Perform has pace stalking position which will
give him the jump on the disadvantaged deep closers in the Preakness but found
himself way too far back off the pace after a rough start left him in last in
last in the Tesio before he passed the entire field en route to victory. The
Tesio winner usually doesn’t threaten to win the Preakness but the Tesio winner
is not usually sent out by a classic winning trainer like Shug McGaughey.
Connections paid-up a ton of money to supplement into this race.
Play in exacta and trifecta box w/ #3 Mage, who needs no introduction as the
Kentucky Derby winner and is the worthy favorite and horse to beat. His
off-the-pace running style is proved to be ideal for the Derby, but that
late-closing style is generally not the key to winning the Preakness, so he
will need to prove himself all over again to beat this field of fresher
challengers.
Play in exacta and trifecta box w/ #1 National Treasure, who ran a solid return
from a layoff last time when fourth in the Santa Anita Derby. At his best he
finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, so he can challenge in this spot
if able to rediscover best form for trainer Bob Baffert. Drew the rail, and the
rail horse has won the Preakness only 3 times in the past 62 years.
Play in exacta and trifecta box w/ #4 Coffeewithchris, who is 20-1 on the morning line for local connections who paid to get their horse into the Preakness field. He has front running speed, which is key in the Preakness, and perhaps the pace of the Preakness will be slower than what he faced in the Teseo last time.
